Answer
·  What is Ringlink?

Ringlink is a CGI Perl program that you can install on your own server and create a "ring" of web sites. It is free software, available under the GNU General Public License

·  What are the advantages of using Ringlink on my own server as opposed to setting my ring up on someone else's Ringlink system?

There are many, such as:

  1. you do not need to rely on anyone to maintain their server

  2. you have complete control over all aspects of customization

·  What kind of load will Ringlink place on my system?

One opinion has been that it does not place too much extra load, but another was that it would be too taxing on a virtual server account.

It should be noted that so far (almost three years), nobody has reported that a web hosting provider has found a private Ringlink installation being too disturbing to other customers on a shared server.

·  How is the site order determined?

It is simply the order in which the sites are listed in the sites.db file. That file includes both active and inactive sites, and the only difference between them is a "Status" field with the value "active" or "inactive".

The ringmaster can reorder the sites, though, either randomly, or by sorting them alphabetically.
