Don't expect any host to bring traffic to your ring.

I'm hoping Gunnar is right. On my ring several sites generated most of the
traffic. My home page (30,000+ hits/month), my ring home page and another
I host under my URL. After these three the generated traffic dropped
rapidly. However we are talking about a lot of relatively low trafic sites.

Those recieving traffic seamed to have no logic EXCEPT that my site,
because it is relatively well known and book marked by most in my field
recieved VERY LITTLE traffic compared to what it generated. I recieve more
traffic from other rings I am a member of.

In May after I took over the Blacksmiths Ring I built a fancy home page for
it and submitted it to the indexes. I believe those submissions are just
starting to take effect (4-5 months is about right). The last search I
did it was starting to get listed and just recently the new applications
had really started to pick up. That is one reason I am REALLY p.o'd with
Y!/Webring.

The page is a mess now because I had to disable all the links to the old
webring features. That is one reason I decided to go independant. Yahoo!
just wiped out tens of thousands of "ring home" pages without warning or
consideration. Once it is integrated with Ringlink I'll have control of
changes and upgrades.

To make the "ring home" friendly to search engines it has lots of pages
(text gets indexed, not pretty pictures). Intro, rules, forms, stats. . .
It has all the bells and whistles. . . which I just noticed needs to be
updated. . .

If you want your webring and ring home to generate traffic for your page
you need to treat it like an alternate or gateway page. Promote it just
like your regular page.
