i had this happen to me when my members were testing my ringlink
installation for me, but i was never able to put a finger on why it was
happening... we weren't having a lot of people sign up simultaneously, and
my server was having a nice fast stable day. i went over the modifications
i made to the .pm files with a fine tooth comb & everything was in order.
then the next day it suddenly cleared up & things worked fine. so i have no
ideas on it at all, but just wanted to chime in so we know it's not just
happening to you, as an isolated experience.

We've seen a couple more occurences of this - it's happened 4 times in our
first 24 hours.

Any ideas, anyone? It's strange, since the record does get written, that
it
would want to display a message to the user at all. And the user has no
way
of knowing that the record was written - so blithely keeps trying new site
IDs...

Yes Gunnar, this is correct, these instances seemed to occur at the time
when things were hanging some in the sendmail after activating a
new site to
the ring.

Please remember, our members were anxious to get the new images and HTML
fragment up for the webring as the majority of them are as displeased
with
the merger as well. We announced that the ring was open and
ready for site
submissions and were getting several submissions in a short
period of time.
Could this be the reason for what we have seen?

Also , I have another question. I have another ring site that
wants to use
your script however they want auto assigned site ID's. Can an auto
number
be assigned and what files would I need to modify to accommodate
them? This
is a ring of more than 700 members and I would like to help them out.

Thanks!

Fawnna

We've had a couple of instances today where someone kept getting
a message,
something like "pick another site ID". So they would try again -
and would
end up with 6 entries in the queue (with 6 different site IDs).
Even though
the system was saying "pick another site ID" it was still saving their
record with the site IDs that they had chosen.

The site IDs were not duplicates. And I'm wondering if it was because
the
ring was locked by another user signing up - and because the code
couldn't
get a lock - it's displaying that message. And the message is wrong...
that's just a guess, haven't had a chance to ask Fawnna if that's even a
possibility - but thought I'd throw it out to y'all to see what
you thought.

Both times it seems to have occurred at a time when the system
was hanging,
trying to send an email.

Pam
